Second Fairtrade coffee morning is a success

    09/05/2017
Middlesex University further commits to Fairtrade after a successful Fairtrade coffee morning on May 9th

Expanding on the first one in April, the event on May 9th included tea and coffee as well as the addition of hot chocolate and Fairtrade snacks.

Fairtrade is a growing international movement, which aims to ensure that producers in developing countries get a fair deal for Tim and Jotheir products. Middlesex University prides it self on its new Fairtrade status and its importance was signified as Vice chancellor Tim Blackman was present for the event.

Jo Williamson, Contracts Officer and event organiser, stated that “Fairtrade tea, coffee and snacks are already being sold on campus with snacks including chocolates, brownies and flapjacks”. On the day, Fairtrade bananas were handed out as well as hot drinks, displaying further commitment, not only to Fairtrade, but the health of all students.

“This is a vital time for students with exams and other pressures so to be able to get a coffee today and see a difference the University is making is outstanding” stated Nauria Khan, current student.

Jo went on to state that “We are looking to hold these events regularly with an event every month or two during term time”. The event also encouraged students to get involved with Fairtrade on Twitter @MDXFairtrade and through their e-mail.

Middlesex’s status as a Fairtrade University demonstrates its commitment to the goals set out by the Fairtrade Foundation:

    • Both the University and the Student Union have adopted Fairtrade Policies‌
    • Fairtrade products including coffee, chocolate, and clothing are sold in University retail outlets
    • Fairtrade products are served at University meetings and conferences
    • Regular events and campaigns are run to raise awareness about Fairtrade, including Fairtrade Fortnight
    • The University has an active staff and student Fairtrade steering group
