Getting vital work experience

Our dedicated Employability Advisers are responsible for delivering our newly launched service through which we will help you to source, access and secure a placement, internship or volunteering opportunity with an employer.  Work placements are a standard part of many courses and provide the opportunity not only to develop your employability skills but to undertake work directly related to your programme of study. There are a number of work placement options available including:

  • A four year sandwich degree, which includes a credit bearing placement of up to twelve months. Students joining Middlesex from October 2012 onwards will not pay tuition fees during the course of a year long work placement
  • An internship is a term used to describe a placement of less than one year and you can access specialist modules on your course to undertake a credit bearing internship
  • A number of our postgraduate courses include an accredited and/or compulsory work placement element

Case Studies
Melissa Bent

“I chose Middlesex because I was impressed by how many work experience, volunteering and employment opportunities it offers. I have volunteered in the Student Associates
Scheme working as a teaching assistant in a school, followed by working as a student ambassador for Middlesex, promoting higher education to young people. I have also completed a one year work placement at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

The Placements Team at Middlesex helped me find, apply and interview well for placements I was interested in, which meant I was able to get my first choice. I loved my placement and it reconfirmed that a career in Educational Psychology was exactly what I wanted to do. I worked as a teaching assistant with hospitalised children who were unable to attend their regular school.

All the lessons were specifically constructed to lift their spirits and help them to learn. It was such an incredible and invaluable experience that developed skills that will last a lifetime. Studying at Middlesex was definitely the right decision for me. I’ve had an amazing time, gained independence and built confidence.”

Olumuyiwa won a place on the prestigious United Nations internship scheme. He spent several weeks at the UN headquarters in NewYork gaining invaluable experience.
“Our tutors encouraged us to apply for internships to gain practical and valuable first hand experience. I was privileged to meet with world leaders from Presidents to Prime Ministers. The internship also provided a forum of networking opportunities with other individuals and interns from diverse backgrounds, who can be of assistance to one another in the future once contacts are made and maintained.”
