Learner Development Unit

Academic writing and language

Success at university comes not only from understanding your subject – but from being able to describe, discuss and analyse it in an appropriate way. Our academic writing sessions support your personal development of appropriate and effective communication styles

The Learner Development Profile and Academic Language Development course

The LDU & ALD ask all students to use the LDP process to identify their own particular study support needs. You can use the results to guide you to the most appropriate resources for you – including, in some cases, access to an academic language enhancement course

Maths, Stats & Numeracy

Many subjects - and employers - require you to demonstrate mathematical understanding – shown through the application of statistics or numeracy within your course work, exams and job interviews. Our MSN staff will support you in developing your knowledge and practice in this area.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is the most common type of SpLD, and typically means that a person finds significant difficulty in reading letters and words, spelling, distinguishing sounds, and organising complex thoughts, especially in writing – or a combination of all these.  Our unit offers dedicated support for students who have been identified as dyslexic through our in-house screening programme.
