    Heatwave advice

    21/06/2017

The Met Office has forecast potential heatwave conditions for all parts of England. It is recommended that students consider the following adjustments during this period:

    Stay out of the heat:

    • Keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm.
    • If you have to go out in the heat, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat and light scarf.

    Cool yourself down:

    • Have plenty of cold drinks, and avoid caffeine and hot drinks.
    • Eat cold foods, particularly salads and fruit with a high water content.
    • Avoid extreme physical exertion.
    • Wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothes.

Try to keep your environment cool:

    • Open windows early to purge night air.
    • Close curtains and blinds that receive morning or afternoon sun
    • Turn off non-essential lights and electrical equipment – they generate heat.
    • Electric fans may provide some relief.

If you or others feel unwell:

    • Try to get help if you feel dizzy, weak, anxious or have intense thirst and headache;
    • Drink some water or fruit juice to rehydrate.
    • Contact Security on 0208 411 6200 if you require first aid assistance.

Many Muslim students may be fasting during the current period of Ramadan. During hot weather it’s important to balance food and fluid intake between fasts and especially to drink enough water. Further information can be found here.
