  • Using the Library

Lost cards

Lost ID cards should be reported immediately to the Security Office in the Quad, College Building.


To purchase a new replacement card:


  • Log into the online store: www.onlinestore.mdx.ac.uk, select the following
  • Product Catalogue > Estates >  Facilities > Security > Replacement ID Card and follow instructions.
  • Once payment has been processed, take the payment reference number to the Security Office in the Quad.
    Please note refunds are not available if original card is found.

ID card access to the Sheppard Library

You must have your Middlesex Student ID card with you to access the Sheppard Library and to take out books and other loan items.

If you forget your ID, two free day passes are allowed per Academic year.
Third day passes cost £10 and this charge is added to your library account. No fourth day passes can be given. Please note that Day Passes are also required for weekends.

Children on premises

Children are only allowed into Sheppard Library with a responsible adult and should be closely supervised at all times whilst on University premises.

If you are a parent or carer and need to bring your child with you, you will need to sign in at library reception where you will be given a purple lanyard for your child to wear. Library staff will then know that the child is authorised to be in the library and is accompanied by a parent or carer.

Library and IT Policy

By using Sheppard Library you agree to abide by the Student Conduct and Discipline Rules.

In addition, all users of the Library must observe the rules set out in the Library and IT Policy.

  • Study Spaces

Studying in the Sheppard Library

Study spaces are available on all floors, but please be aware that the second and third floors of the library are for silent, individual study only.

We want every student to get the most out of their studying and so we ask everyone to adhere to the following:

  • Remember our staff are here to help you –they will treat you with courtesy and respect- please do the same in return
  • Hot food is not allowed in the Sheppard Library at any time, but you are welcome to bring in cold food and drink (apart from the silent study areas, which are drinks only )
  • Please set your Mobile Phone to silent in the silent study areas

If you need help or experience any issues regarding excessive noise or behaviour please text  07785 447466  and a member of library staff will assist you.

Online Classes

Headphones are required when attending online classes in the library study spaces.

Please note that the 2nd and 3rd-floor silent study area cannot be used for online classes.

  • Library Tours

Join us for a Library tour to explore the facilities and resources available to you!

Our Library Experience team members are excited to guide you through the various study spaces and services provided at the Sheppard Library.

During the tour:

  • Visit the StudyHelp area - IT, The Learning Enhancement Team, and Subject Liaison Librarians.
  • Learn how to use the library with guidance on borrowing and returning books.
  • Find how to access various library resources to support your academic needs.

Tours will be available after the Winter break from the week commencing 8th January.

Tours are available from Monday to Friday, with starting times at 11:00 and 15:00. The tour will last 30 minutes and each tour is limited to 15 students only. So, make sure to secure your spot by booking in advance!

    • Is this service for you?

      You are entitled to register as a distance learner if:

      • On courses validated as distance learning by the university.
      • Officially designated work based learners.
      • MProf and DProf candidates.
      • Taught post-graduates in the writing up period between the end of teaching and their completion date.
      • PhD students who are writing up their thesis.
      • Students at partner institutions, with whom agreement has been reached.

      In all cases you should be fully enrolled with the University.

      Please note: if you are ever able to visit a Middlesex University campus, you may use the services available to all students (you will need your Middlesex University ID card with you to gain access to the Library. If you do not have a Middlesex student ID card please contact us so that we can arrange one for you). For the full range of services, visit the Library Home page.

    • Requesting Materials

      If you wish to access a book held by the library please follow the Postal Loan instructions, please note wherever possible, we will provide you with access to an electronic copy of your requested title.

      NB If you wish to collect a copy from the library, select Hendon from the drop down menu.

      To request a scan of a journal article or book chapter from Middlesex stock, please email the team at lrdlsu@mdx.ac.uk

      To request a journal article or book chapter not held at Middlesex, please use the Inter-Library Loans service.

    • Your library account

      Books are issued to your library record on the day they are put in the post and we also add 10 working days to the loan period to allow for delivery and return via the postal system. It is worth checking your library record regularly to make sure that you have received the items on your record and that they have been taken off your record after you might reasonably have expected them to have arrived back at the library.

Middlesex University participates in the Sconul Access Scheme. As a student at Middlesex University you can use other Higher Education Institution libraries participating in the scheme. Visiting other libraries outside Middlesex?

See below for some useful information about SCONUL access and visiting other HE and public libraries.

SCONUL Access – You may need to use other libraries if your research is very specialised. Academic staff and all students except full time undergraduates can have borrowing rights at virtually every other academic library in the UK through SCONUL Access. Always check the webpages of the library you intend to visit to ensure they will be open.

Library Hub Discover -  This finds rare and unique research material by bringing together the catalogues of major UK and Irish libraries. In a single search you can discover the resources at University Libraries, specialist research libraries and the UK’s National Libraries (including the British Library. You can search just libraries in London to find resources near you.

British Library - The British Library's collection of over 150 million items covers every age and place of written civilisation, from unique historical documents to the latest information sources for business, industry and research. Visit the website for full details about access and information on the collections.

Local Libraries – Hendon Public Library is minutes away from our campus and has a fully searchable catalogue including some interesting e-resources.
