MDXequals is an umbrella programme delivered by the university’s Careers and Employability Service and provides a unique menu of events and activities designed specifically to support students from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Now more than ever, employers are looking to diversify their intake because they realise that variety of thought results in wider-reaching and more positive business outcomes. Therefore, recognising and articulating your uniqueness is key to securing the role you’re aiming for.
You'll be led to identifying and positively articulating your skills, social and cultural attributes, lived experiences and aspirations. Throughout the year there will be sessions with employers, organisations, alumni and students who can share their knowledge and experience. We recently have set up a number of different sessions highlighting different events such as International Women’s Day, Mental Health Awareness Week, and contributed to open conversations around Black Lives Matter and disability awareness.
We have recorded a number of these sessions and collected resources that might be of use to you throughout your time at Middlesex and beyond. Most of them are highlighted below and more are to come in the following years.
In this series, MDXworks, in collaboration with MDXSU, have provided x6 (monthly) workshops dedicated to preparing our PG international community to navigate their futures. The series included content around the process of finding work in the UK, articulating your employment story, and networking.
Participants also benefited from dedicated 1:1 drop-in support from MDXworks Faculty Employability Advisers and pre-recorded content via our International Student Support video playlist.

Recently Youth Employment UK and guest presenters Nick Slater and Liz Ward from Stonewall held a webinar discussion about how employers can support LGBTQ+ young people. In this webinar, you’ll learn about the experiences of LGBTQ+ young people not in education, training or work, hear insights from LGBTQ+ young people on the barriers they face when accessing employment, and learn about how you as employers can help LGBTQ+ young people to enter the world of work.
We kicked-off the MDX= programme with an event designed to celebrating diversity and breaking employment barriers with an afternoon of activities including diverse guest speakers, culture cafe and free international street food.
Diversity Day was just the first event from a series of sessions dedicated to preparing you for a world of exciting opportunities when you graduate.
As part of Black History Month 2021 we organised a panel session and spoke to a range of entrepreneurs about the changes within entrepreneurship, identifying and discussing barriers that have been broken, personal experiences and insight.
A large number of students have issues with their mental health or wellbeing at some point during their academic studies. This can have an impact on your ability to find, secure and sustain employment.
We’ve invited students to attend a series of sessions and meet with a variety of professionals who shared their experiences of working through the pandemic, how they have managed and what issues they continue to face to this day.
A number of organizations attended who support students with a variety of different seen/unseen disabilities and differences. The focus was on seeing those differences as strengths and also looked at the aspect of disclosure. The sessions were recorded and added to our resources.
MDXworks honoured International Women’s Day in 2021 and celebrated the achievements of our students, alumni and staff by organising three sessions throughout the day on 8 March. The goal was to facilitate authentic and genuine discussions between our MDX community to drive knowledge exchange and provide a platform where we could share our unique experiences!
#IWD21 tackled a number of missions to help forge a gender equal world, taking action and increasing visibility while calling out inequality. The theme for this year was #ChooseToChallenge, which was also the foundation of our sessions and social media campaign.
