International design award for Middlesex illustrator

17/05/2016
Middlesex University third year illustration student Nicole Cowan has scooped an international D&AD New Blood award for her creative work around the theme of ‘Shop till we drop’.

The QuestThe D&AD New Blood awards are a series of industry standard briefs set by some of the biggest global brands and are open to students and designers under 24 across the world. Nicole, who is from Canterbury, was picked as the winner of Shutterstock’s brief for her work on tragedy, the quest and overcoming the monster.

TragedyNicole Cowan said: “My most common inspiration is noticing and documenting the people around us, this has become a main focus within my work. It intrigues me to think about how places are defined by those who live in them and how people behave and interact within that environment.

“Studying on the BA Illustration degree at Middlesex has helped my work develop so much. We are constantly encouraged to develop our own style, avoiding a 'house style' within our work and our tutors encourage us to work outside our comfort zones, to experiment, which over the three years pushes your work into unpredictable directions.

Overcoming the Monster

“Another really amazing thing about Middlesex is the fact we have our own desk space in the studios, which allows a creative environment to evolve, so as students and friends we all inspire each other!”

Nancy Slonims, Middlesex University’s Senior Lecturer in illustration said: “Since 1962, D&AD has been inspiring a community of creative thinkers by celebrating and stimulating the finest in design and advertising.

“Nicole has produced a fantastic piece of work in response to a very difficult brief and her hard work and intelligent solution has resulted in her winning this prestigious award.”
