In August we set up a working group to decide how best to reduce the amount of plastic and packaging we use and waste on campus. Working with students, staff and student union representatives we identified several initiatives to try to tackle.
One prolific offender in the mix is the disposable coffee cup.
On campus we use in excess of 19,000 disposable cups every month (they don’t go to landfill, they are incinerated to create energy from waste). You can already buy a reusable cup from any Chartwells outlet and for a purchase price of £3 you get your first drink included. Every hot drink you buy using your own cup – it doesn’t have to be a Middlesex reusable cup, it can be your favourite mug from home or the office – you will save 20p.
To encourage everyone to get involved, from 3 January 2019, if you don’t have a reusable cup, 5p will be added to the cost of your drink.
Importantly, any income generated by this charge will be used by us to fund student-led sustainable campus initiatives. Of course, we hope this will be minimal, but will let you know how much and how we spend as the year progresses.
