General Election

Results from the General Election and what this means for Brexit

Last week’s General Election saw the Conservative Party win a landslide victory, meaning Boris Johnson remains the UK’s Prime Minister. Local Conservative MPs Matthew Offord (Hendon) and Theresa Villiers (Chipping Barnet) successfully kept their seats.

What does this mean for Brexit?

The Conservative majority is strong enough for the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement Bill to pass through the House of Commons. The Bill is expected to be re-introduced this Friday (20th) and, if adopted, would avoid the risk of an imminent no-deal exit with the UK leaving the EU on 31 January 2020 and entering into the transition period.

We will continue to influence and strengthen our relationship with the Government to ensure an effective post-Brexit settlement for universities and university students.
