Unite hall residents - rooms affected by fire, water, or electricity damage - important update

    20/03/2019
Important update for those affected by the fire yesterday at Unite Halls

Following on from yesterday's update after the fire at Unite halls, we would like to provide further information for those affected. We have also just sent emails to all the students affected by fire, water, or electricity damage.

For those of you who were in a room that was damaged by the fire, due to both the smoke and water, it will not be safe for living in the immediate future. Once assessments have been made, we will let you know when you can return to your rooms.

Unite is working with Middlesex to source a variety of alternative spaces for you to live, including other rooms within Unite or at other Middlesex Halls of Residence.

You will be called later today by Middlesex’s Student Housing Services team, so that they can talk through options with you. Their contact details are below if you have any questions.

For more details about your current room, please talk with a member of Unite. You can contact their reception desk on 020 8885 5903.

For those of you who were in a room damaged by water, you will be unable to return today. Unite are working with contractors to assess the damage so we can confirm exactly when you will be able to return. Assessments show that floors 1-5 have been affected the most.

For more details about these arrangements, please talk with a member of Unite. You can contact their reception desk on 020 8885 5903.

Finally, for those of you who were in a room where the electricity was compromised, Unite has informed us that electricity to floors 1-9 was restored last night at 1:30AM. Checks are currently being carried out and we will be able to update you by 4pm as to whether you will be able to return to your room in Unite.

As there is no other damage to your room, if these tests and checks show that the electricity has been fully restored, you will be able to return to your room this evening. Unite will organise coaches from the Stratford accommodation, leaving at 4pm. If you are elsewhere, please note that Unite will reimburse your travel expenses, so please keep receipts where possible.

If the tests show any remaining issues with the electricity, another night will be booked in the Stratford accommodation and we will send a further update tomorrow morning.

For more details about these arrangements, please talk with a member of Unite. You can contact their reception desk on 020 8885 5903.

In our email yesterday, we noted that all Unite residents have contents insurance included within your rent, so you will be able to claim for any damages that have been caused. Students asked if they would need to pay the ‘excess’ charges when claiming their insurance. Unite have since confirmed that they will cover any excess costs for students claiming on their contents insurance.

Please also note that Unite will reimburse any travel expenses across this period, so please keep these receipts where possible.
