    LGBT+ History Month 2020

February is a celebratory month, to make LGBT+ people visible in all their rich diversity and to educate out prejudice.

At Middlesex, we pride ourselves in being a community where everyone is accepted and welcome. The LGBT+ Everyone Else Forum is one of a number of equality forums at MDX, open to all staff, students, alumni, business partners, friends and members of the local community.

February is a particularly celebratory month here at MDX.

To really celebrate gender diversity and different gender identities, some of you have created two campaign books that are all about what it really means to be a part of the LGBT+ community:

These campaigns give us a powerful insight into the lives of fellow people within the LGBT+ community and the inequalities they still encounter on a daily basis. Some of you have created empowering videos for the campaign, by sharing your side of the story with us and encouraging all of us to take a stand against hate.

    Campaign videos - empowering stories:

LGBT+ History Month originated in the US and was first held in the UK in February 2005, with the aim of celebrating the achievements and the diversity of and counteracting prejudice against the LGBT community.

LGBT+ history dates back to the first recorded instances of same-sex love and sexuality of ancient civilizations, involving the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender  (LGBT+) peoples and cultures around the world. A battle against centuries of persecution —resulting in shame, suppression, and secrecy -  has finally in more recent decades become part of more mainstream historical narratives.

It is important to remember that there is still a battle for LGBT + equality and inclusion. People are still being persecuted for their sexuality globally. LGBT+ History month is a time for celebration - for people who fought for LGBT change and also a reminder that there is still an ongoing battle for LGBT+.

To mark LGBT+ History month, we have a number of events running on campus where everyone in the #TeamMDX community is welcome:

We have some great events lined up in celebration of LGBT+ History month:
