May Wellbeing Spotlight

This month’s wellbeing spotlight is mental health, and 9th – 15th is also Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW).

We all have mental health, and it’s normal to have some wobbles every now and again, especially around trickier times of the year such as exams season. What’s important is that we check in with our own mental health regularly, and pay more attention to it around these stressful times. Take a few minutes to check #MyWholeSelf MOT below.

Fill in your stress container here, create a free personalised mind plan from the NHS here, and find tips on managing mental health below.

There are lots of resources available to support your mental health and it can feel overwhelming knowing where to start. We’d recommend first identifying how you are feeling with the #MyWholeSelfMOT and filling in the 5 minute NHS mind plan above to establish what’s contributing to how you’re feeling and to get some personalised tips. Once you’ve done that, we have organised some further resources below based on your learning preferences:

For visual/auditory learners

  1. Watch this two minute video which includes five tips to maintain mental health.
  2. Take a short break and try this 8 minute active stretch with Kess from The Fitness Pod.

Request a call with the student callers team and have a chat with a fellow student about how you are feeling.

  1. Watch our favourite videos/video series this month from LinkedIn Learning:

    - Supporting your mental health during challenging times

    - Staying positive in the face of negativity

  2. If you remember February's wellbeing spotlight on nutrition and healthy eating, you’ll remember the influence of a healthy diet on our mental health. Watch some related LinkedIn Learning videos in the ‘Eat well to study, work and play well’ series, and don’t forget all of the places on campus where you can order nutritious and delicious food

Click here to check out all the food places we have available on campus

For reading/writing learners

  1. Read these tips for looking after your mental health from Student Minds. They have split suggestions based on time available you have – from a few minutes to a few hours.
  2. Read these tips from Mind, the mental health charity.
  3. Explore the health and wellness pages on UniHub, and Student Support and Wellbeing Services available to support you with your mental health. Don’t forget that sometimes what can be useful to our mental health is seeking support from a related area of our wellbeing, for example around our finances or career prospects.

For kinesthetic learners

  1. Download the Fika app (use your MDX email address to access premium features for free) and start working on the seven skills of mental fitness.

Additional support

Counselling and Mental Health

Counselling and Mental Health can support you with your mental health. You could start with a one-off session or refer yourself for ongoing support. Try to consider whether other support within the University could be of use, too. If your mental health is being negatively affected by your workload for example, speak with your Programme team too.

Counselling and Mental Health offer safe group spaces to discuss experiences with fellow students, learn skills and offer support to help you better understand yourself.

If you have a diagnosed mental health condition, register with the Disability and Dyslexia Service to make sure that you have the right support in place to succeed.

Student support events

Teams across the University are regularly coordinating events which you might useful to manage and nourish your mental health.

Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW)

MHAW gives us an opportunity to be more mindful of our own and others’ mental health. This year’s theme is loneliness. It’s normal to feel lonely from time to time, but developing and maintaining connections with others are an important part of maintaining mental health. Find ways to meet new people, find a listening ear and reduce feelings of loneliness in our MHAW small programme of activities and events below.

MHA week

Did you know that Counselling and Mental Health (CMH) run Workshops on Demand? Explore sessions on managing procrastination, managing presentation and performance anxiety, developing healthy habits and more on UniHub.

This week, like every week, our Student Support Callers are available each weekday 9am-5pm. The Uni Doctor are also on campus for their regular Friday GP clinic for registered students. If you’re taking part in some physical activity this week, don’t forget to download MDXMoves to earn rewards for your activity. Open play basketball and table tennis are available anytime on MDX Terrace. All sessions below are free unless listed otherwise. There are a mix of in-person and online options delivered by MDX and external organisations (click the links to find out more). Some activities require you to register in advance.
