Key details about upcoming national strike action at universities, February and March 2023

Update on industrial action – strikes resuming on 15 March, additional date added.

Dear students, following a pause in industrial strike action, UCU have decided to resume strikes next week and have added an additional day of strike action on Wednesday 15 March 2023. This additional day which replaces one of the five that was moved aside during the pause. Please see the updated table below for information on all strike dates, which come to an end on Wednesday 22 March 2023.

The University will open as normal on the days of strike action. Please keep checking UniHub for further updates. If there are any changes to teaching, support service opening hours, or any other University provision, we will send further updates about this.

The national union that represents academic staff in the UK has voted for strike action in the coming weeks. Here are all the details you need about how it affects your studies at Middlesex.

A national strike is taking place, which you may have seen covered in the news. This was voted for by members of the University and College Union (UCU), which represents academics at UK universities – including Middlesex University.

The dates are below:

March dates
Tuesday 21, Wednesday 22 March

As in November, the University will open as normal on the days of strike action.

The Sheppard Library will remain open 24 hours a day, and you can find the opening hours of the Unihelp desk online. We are aware of the potential impact these strikes could have on you, and you are reminded that our Wellbeing and Support services will also remain open as usual.

These updates may come directly from your Programme Team, so check your University emails regularly.  However, staff do not need to tell the University before striking so you may not be told in advance.

Will other support services be open?

The University will be open as usual, it is teaching that is affected. The Sheppard Library will remain open 24 hours a day, and you can find the opening hours of the Unihelp desk online. Information on other University support services, including their standard opening hours, can be found below:

Will there be any disruption to Academic Writing and Numeracy Support?

There is likely to be disruption to Academic Writing and Numeracy support, as some staff may be on strike, impacting sessions within programmes, tutorials, open workshops and StudyHelp support. Classes will run as usual if staff are not on strike, and will not run if they are on strike. The Learning Enhancement Team may not replace or reschedule sessions or tutorials missed due to strike action.

Do the strikes affect all our campuses?

The industrial action only affects members of UCU and therefore our London campus. Teaching at our Dubai and Mauritius campuses should not be affected.
