Leaving your studies

If you are struggling during your time at MDX, we have many support services that can help you before you consider formally withdrawing or suspending your studies.

Interruption of studies

If there is likely to be a significant break in your studies due to change in your personal circumstances, financial or for academic reasons, you will be expected to formally interrupt your studies.

You should seek advice before choosing to interrupt your studies so that you understand the process and the implications for your studies and visa.

Time spent while on interruption may still be counted towards your time limit for degree level study in the UK. Please ensure you talk to a Student Immigration Adviser before you interrupt your studies.

Reporting your interruption

The University is legally obliged to report instances where a Student route visa student is interrupting studies to the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) who are likely to cancel your visa. This is called curtailment.

You will receive an email from the Registry confirming a report has been submitted to the UKVI. Once the report to cease Student route visa sponsorship has been submitted:

  • You will no longer have the right to work in the UK and you must inform your employer of the change in your circumstances
  • Any dependant on your Student route visa will also need to return home with you
  • You cannot travel out of the UK and then attempt to return on your Student route visa. Once you leave the UK, you should consider your Student route visa cancelled.

Leaving the UK

You cannot remain in the UK on a visa which has been curtailed. This means that you need to make arrangements to return home.

If you intend to remain in the UK (or move to another university), you must apply for a new visa in order to retain your legal immigration status. We recommend you do this within 60 days of Registry reporting cease of sponsorship.

UKVI will write to you when they have received notification that you have left your studies. They will give you a new end date for your visa. You must follow the instructions in this letter to avoid staying in the UK illegally.

Once you have left the UK, a hold will be added to your university account. In order to remove this hold, we ask you to send evidence of your departure from the UK. This would normally be a scanned copy of your passport page with re-entry stamp in your home country and a copy of your air-ticket or a copy of your new visa so we can update our records.

Retuning to your studies

When you are ready to return to the University, you will be issued a new CAS number to obtain a new Student route visa.

Please be aware that you will not be issued with a further CAS number to undertake study at the University if you remained in the UK whilst you are on a break / interruption

Withdrawals

If you are considering withdrawing from your course, you should discuss it your Department, and Progression and Support team to explore your options carefully.

Withdrawal will have serious impact on your immigration status in the UK as a Student route visa student and we advise you to talk to the International Student Advisor as soon as possible.

If you have made the final decision to discontinue your studies at Middlesex University, you must follow the formal process to have the withdrawal from the programme of study processed.

The University will report this information and cease Student route visa sponsorship to the UKVI who are likely to cancel your visa (curtail). You will receive an email from the Registry confirming a report has been submitted to the UKVI.

Once the cease of Student route visa sponsorship report has been submitted:

  • You no longer have the right to work in the UK. You must inform your employer of the change in your circumstances
  • Any dependant on your Student route visa will also need to return home with you
  • You cannot travel out of the UK and then attempt to return on your Student route visa. Once you leave the UK, you should consider your Student route visa cancelled.

If you applied for Student route visa using a CAS letter from Middlesex University, your current visa is only valid to study at Middlesex University. You need to consider this if you wish to start studying at any other university in the UK as it will most likely mean you have to submit a new visa application.
