    Competition launched for enterprising students and alumni


    Middlesex students and recent alumni have the chance to win up to £1,000 and raise the profile of their businesses by taking part in a new entrepreneurship competition

    The Entrepreneurial Barnet Competition, organised by Middlesex University, Barnet Council, and Barnet and Southgate College, is giving student, alumni and local entrepreneurs the chance to showcase their ideas and win up to £1,000. 

    A prize of £500 and the opportunity for mentoring, support and advice from business experts will be awarded across four categories of competitor: Middlesex University undergraduate students; Middlesex University postgraduate students and recent alumni (graduated within last 12 months); students at Barnet and Southgate College; and Borough of Barnet residents with a business idea or business start-up that is less than one year old.

    Entrepreneurial Barnet CompetitionThe winners from each of the four categories will then go head to head in a business pitch at the head office of Brent Cross regeneration scheme developer Hammerson, which is sponsoring the competition, on 8 March. The overall champion will receive a further £500 in prize money.

    David Williams, Director for Corporate Engagement at Middlesex University, said: "Promoting entrepreneurship is one of our key areas at Middlesex, so we are delighted to work with our partners in identifying, recognising and supporting new enterprise.

    "Highlighting innovation and good business ideas can only help encourage other businesses to grow and compete more widely."   

    Councillor Daniel Thomas, Chairman of Assets, Regeneration and Growth Committee, added: "This Entrepreneurial Barnet Competition is an exciting opportunity for local entrepreneurs to get their ideas out there and receive support to kick-start their businesses. Good luck to all entrepreneurs from across the Borough who take part."

    The competition runs from now until midday on Friday 19 February 2016, with entrants required to complete a business plan using the template provided, which will be judged by a panel of business experts. These should be submitted by email to
