    Scholarships and bursaries

    Financial help from Middlesex

    Most UK/EU undergraduate students can get loans to cover their fees and, depending on your family's income, you might be entitled to more help from the government in the form of loans or grants. International students may also be able to access financial support from their government.

    We recognise that this help is not enough for some students and we do not want anyone to be discouraged from studying with us because of their financial situation.

    The first section of the list below contains scholarships and awards for new students entering their first year at Middlesex.

    The second section contains scholarships and awards for those who are continuing into their second or third year of undergraduate study at Middlesex.

    The final section contains scholarships and awards for which postgraduate students can apply, including our Dean's Academic Excellence Scholarship, worth up to 50% of the Masters fee. We recognise that postgraduate study can give you the edge in today's competitive job market so we offer these scholarships and awards to support ambitious and academically gifted graduates in achieving their career goals.

    • New undergraduate students

      • Community Scholarships

        Middlesex University Community Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students who have been an excellent role model within their school, college or community, and/or have succeeded in overcoming personal difficulties or challenging situations. Students who are awarded the Community Scholarship will receive £6,000 cash award. The payment will be made in three instalments with £2,000 per academic year for 3 years.

        Eligibility

        To be eligible, applicants must:

        • - Be a NEW undergraduate student, in which this will be the first year of their studies at Middlesex University
        • - Be starting Year 1 entry of their undergraduate degree, and completing a full 3 year course
        • - Attend a state-funded school or college in London boroughs of Barnet, Enfield, Brent or Waltham Forest*
        • - Achieve at least BBC in A-levels, DMM in BTEC Level 3, or 45 credits Merit or higher at Level 3 Access to HE Diploma
        • - Put Middlesex University as their firm choice for a full-time or part-time undergraduate course through UCAS
        • - Have made an online application to Student Finance and be eligible for an offer of funding
        • - Be ordinarily resident in the UK
        • - Agree to the community scholarship terms and conditions

        In addition applicants must show evidence that they meet at least one of the following criteria:

        • - Being a successful role model in their school or college
        • - Succeeding despite personal difficulties or challenging situations
        • - Engagement in the community including volunteering and sports

        Conditions of the scholarship

        Community Scholarship recipients would be expected to participate in various activities and events aimed at raising aspirations and awareness of Higher Education. This might include for example returning to their school/college to encourage other students to consider Higher Education as their future option, supporting marketing and outreach events or contributing article about their experience. It is also a great opportunity for scholars to gain practical work experience, meet new people and have a direct, positive influence on young people's lives.

        We highly encourage applications from mature students as 2 out 5 scholarships per borough will be made available to mature** students (subject to suitable applicants).

        Note:

        *For the London borough of Waltham Forest, only students from Waltham Forest College or Sir George Monoux Sixth Form are eligible to apply.
        **A mature student is anyone over the age of 21 who did not go to university after school or college.
      • International Bursaries and Merit Awards

        International students may be eligible for one of the following bursaries or merit awards to help fund their studies:

        Regional Award
        Amount: £1,000 - £2,000 fee bursary
        Eligibility: any non-EU international undergraduate student in any subject

        International students may be eligible for £1,000 - £2,000 towards course fees for the first year of study.

        Please note, that students are only eligible to receive one scholarship award. We assess eligibility and funding amounts on a case by case basis which is dependent on your course, application and country. There is no separate application for these awards; international students should apply for their chosen course through the normal application process. Successful candidates will be notified at the point of offer for a programme of study and the award amount will be deducted from their tuition fees.

      • The Middlesex University Food Safety Prize

        Amount: £100
        Eligibility: Any Environmental Health student

        The Middlesex University Food Safety Prize is available to any Environmental Health student who has demonstrated excellent academic potential, and achieved the best overall performance in their Food Practical exam in the opinion of the Food Practical examiners. Two awards are offered; one at undergraduate and one at postgraduate level. Each student will receive a £100 cash award.

      • Redrow Aspirational Award

        Amount: £2,000
        Eligibility: Any incoming undergraduate student based in London
        Deadline: Friday 31 August 2018

        The Redrow Aspirational Award has been generously donated by Redrow Homes Ltd, a leading residential property developer. The award will fund one incoming undergraduate student studying any subject. To apply for this scholarship you must demonstrate financial need and academic excellence. You should currently be living in London and the successful candidate will be expected to provide regular updates to their donor, throughout the year.

      • Sports Scholarships

        Amount: Varies, from £200 to £1,000
        Eligibility: Any undergraduate or postgraduate student demonstrating a significant achievement in sport
        Deadline: Friday 7 September 2018

        If you are competing at a regional or national level in your sport, you could be eligible for support and funding through the Middlesex Sport Scholarship Scheme. This is for talented sports performers, who are keen to continue their sporting endeavours and compete for the University. Three levels of scholarship are available with financial support ranging from £200 to £1,000 in any academic year.

        The decision on the level of financial support offered to successful applicants will be made by the Scholarships Committee, whose decision is final. Applications must be supported by a written reference and evidence relevant to sporting achievements.

      • Study4Success Award
        Amount: accommodation costs for the first year of study
        Eligibility: any new undergraduate student currently living in UK social housing who has made a positive difference in their community
        Deadline: 31st August 2018

        Optivo has partnered with Middlesex University to offer one successful applicant, who has made a difference to their local community, the opportunity to have their accommodation fees paid for one academic year. The successful student will receive accommodation costs in Usher Hall, a Middlesex University hall of residence, which will be paid directly towards the student's accommodation fees. Students who are eligible must have a confirmed offer to study at Middlesex and currently be living in social housing, although preference will be given to a Optivo housing resident. The student should demonstrate how they have made a difference or contribution to their community. The winning student will be required to provide Optivo with three updates on their progress throughout the year.

      • Lucy Graham Dance Award
        Amount: £500
        Eligibility: any incoming or continuing undergraduate student
        Deadline: Friday 31 August 2018

        The Lucy Graham Dance Award is available for incoming or current undergraduate students who are studying within the discipline of dance and have demonstrated academic excellence displaying both creativity and originality. The student should be able to display achievement despite economic and/or personal difficulties and display determination and a willingness to work with the community.

    • Continuing undergraduate students

      • The Glenn Vaus Scholarship

        Amount: £3,000
        Eligibility:
        Continuing Interior Design students progressing onto Year 2 or 3
        Deadline: Friday 31 August 2018

        The Glenn Vaus Scholarship was donated in the memory of Glenn Vaus who was an Interior Design alumnus. The Scholarship is available to an Interior Design student who has displayed creativity and originality despite economic or personal difficulties. If you are an Interior Design student progressing on to Year 2 or 3 of the course then you are eligible to apply.

      • Lucy Graham Dance Award
        Amount: £500
        Eligibility: any incoming or continuing undergraduate student
        Deadline: Friday 31 August 2018

      • The Michael Rosen Prize for Marketing

        Amount: £1,000
        Eligibility: Any second or third year undergraduate Marketing student
        Deadline: Monday 9 July 2018

        The Rosen family generously donated this award for academic achievement at Middlesex University in memory of Michael Rosen who was a former Governor of the University. To apply for this scholarship you should be a second or third year undergraduate student who can demonstrate excellence in Marketing practice and financial need. The winning student will be given £1,000 and a certificate of achievement.

    • Postgraduate students

      • The Alumni Bursary - worth up to 20% of the master's fee
        Amount: up to 20% of the tuition fee
        Eligibility: any Middlesex student or alumnus in any subject

        We offer all alumni who are UK/EU citizens a 20% fee reduction on postgraduate courses. International alumni can benefit from 10% off their masters fees. There is no separate application process for your alumni bursary. When applying for your course, please highlight that you are an alumni during the admissions process to ensure the bursary is applied.

        This offer applies to all alumni with a Middlesex undergraduate degree, including those who studied with a collaborative partner, subject to eligibility. Alumni bursaries are only applicable to self-financing students and students not eligible for funding from Student Finance England. Where courses are part sponsored, e.g. the Masters Social Work course, the alumni bursary will only apply to the fee contribution paid by you. For international alumni who apply through our regional offices, the alumni bursary cannot be held in addition to any regional awards.

        Please note that there are some instances when alumni bursaries will not be applicable:

        • Continuation from PGCert/PGDip to masters courses
        • Introductory courses run through the MDX Summer School as pathways into postgraduate degrees
        • PGCE and integrated masters courses, as these attract other types of funding
        • Students in receipt of any other discount or bursary, including international merits/regional awards and other fee waivers

      • Arts and Creative Industries Scholarship - Application deadline now passed

        Arts and Creative Industries Scholarship

        We have four scholarships available to UK/EU applicants in receipt of (or predicted) minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree (or country-specific equivalent), who are applying for full-time MA/MSc/MRes in the subject area of:

        • Art and Design
        • Media
        • Performing Arts

        International applicants are also eligible to apply if they are an alumnus of the University.

        We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate and articulate:

        • Academic achievement
        • Related professional experience (full time, part time, internships etc)
        • Future vision and a desire to succeed

        The scholarship will be awarded as a 50% reduction of the postgraduate tuition fee and applied on enrolment.

      • Dominican Republic MESCyT Scholarship

        Middlesex has an agreement with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT) to provide scholarships to students from the Dominican Republic at Postgraduate
        level.

      • Funding opportunity: MSc by Research on Ambient Assisted Living

        Gamification to Encourage Increase on Healthier Physical Activity in Children


        We are looking for an enthusiastic MSc by Research student interested in working in partnership with GLL and Middlesex University London to develop a system to incorporate gamification concepts as part of the strategy to encourage healthy physical activity in children. The student will be based at the Hendon campus of Middlesex University and will be working in close cooperation with the GLL team as well.

        The system will have to comply with the following:

        • Run in a computing platform to be determined at month 2 of the project. This could use technology similar to RFID distributed in a playground, be mobile phone based, or a combination of both
        • Encourage children to be healthier through the use of gamification strategies
        • Connect to a collection of similar tools from GLL

        The selected student is expected to have some experience of developing software, especially Java, and if experienced in developing for mobile phone platforms it will be considered an advantage. Technical infrastructure will be provided by Middlesex University and GLL. The system will be piloted on real users whit help of Middlesex University or GLL programmes.
        The studentship will provide £5,000 to cover all fees for the MSc by Research on Ambient Assisted Living at Middlesex University and a surplus for a laptop. Payment will be done directly from GLL to Middlesex University. Living costs should be covered by the student.
        This will be one year full time program (the last two months used to write the Master Thesis). The candidate will start the 12 months long MSc by Research program in late September 2018. Upon successful completion of the program (passing the final viva) , the student will be awarded an MSc by Research on Ambient Assisted Living.

        Health and Education Scholarship

        We have five scholarships available to UK/EU applicants in receipt of (or predicted) minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree (or country-specific equivalent), who are applying for full-time PGCE/MA/MSc/MRes in the subject area of:

        • Healthcare
        • Social Work
        • Education

        We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate and articulate:

        • Academic achievement
        • Related professional experience (full time, part time, internships etc)
        • Future vision and a desire to succeed

        International applicants are also eligible to apply if they are an alumnus of the University.

        The scholarship will be in the form of a cash payment paid in installments across the academic year. This scholarship is to help cover the associated costs of studying these subjects (e.g. travel to work placement destinations).

        Please note the scholarship is only applicable to those courses where fees are payable by the student. Where a student receives government (or other) funding that reduces the fee amount they are required to pay, the cash value will be equivalent to 50% of the fee the student needs to pay.

      • Postgraduate Support Bursary - Application deadline now passed

        Postgraduate Support Bursary

        We have 40 bursaries to award to final year Middlesex undergraduate students who in their final year are in receipt of a maintenance grant from the Student Loans Company (SLC).

        To be eligible for this bursary you must be:

        • a UK/EU applicant
        • final year undergraduate Middlesex student
        • paying the higher £9000 per year fees
        • predicted to receive a 2:1 or higher for your undergraduate degree
        • in receipt of a maintenance grant during your final year
        • applying for a full time postgraduate course
        • some Master's courses will not be eligible for the PSB, including courses which are funded by other public bodies, such as PGCE and social work.

        The bursaries will be awarded on a first come first served basis and will be applied as a 50% reduction of the postgraduate tuition fee upon enrolment.

        You are required to have applied to Middlesex University for an eligible postgraduate programme of study at our London campus before your application can be assessed.

      • Professional Development Scholarship - Application deadline now passed
        Professional Development Scholarship

        For those starting a full-time or part-time course in October 2018 we are offering a limited number of scholarships worth up to 50% of the Masters fee.

        This scholarship is available to all UK/EU applicants currently in employment who have either no university-level academic background, or have been out of the higher education system for over five years. International applicants are also eligible to apply if they are an alumnus of the University.

        We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate that a postgraduate qualification will significantly benefit their current/future employment prospects. You will be required to articulate information regarding:

        • Your professional experience
        • Your planned professional development
        • Employment-related awards, commendations and recognition that you have received

        The scholarship will be awarded as a 50% reduction of the postgraduate tuition fee and applied on enrolment.

        You are required to have applied to Middlesex University for an eligible postgraduate programme of study at our London campus before your application can be assessed. Upon applying, you will be given a Middlesex application number which you will require to complete the scholarship application.

        Please note the following exceptions:

        Applicants for MA Social Work: only in cases where a student is paying the course fees themselves, or part thereof, will we provide the scholarship. The 50% award will only be applied to the part of the fees that the student is paying themselves

        MBA Programmes: only students applying for the general MBA programme are eligible for the scholarship, our specialist MBAs are not eligible.

        Research degrees (PhD) are not eligible for this scholarship.

      • Santander Academic Excellence Scholarship

        Amount: £5,000 reduction in tuition fees
        Eligibility:
        Latin American students who have demonstrated academic excellence
        Deadline: The deadline for this scholarship has now passed

        This award is available to students from Latin America who have demonstrated academic excellence. You must have applied and been accepted to a postgraduate programme at Middlesex University.

      • Santander Postgraduate Work-Based Award

        Amount: £5,000 
        Eligibility: Student who are currently enrolled on a postgraduate research / doctoral programme in Professional Studies
        Deadline: Monday 9 July 2018

        This award is available to work-based candidates who can demonstrate academic excellence and the possibility of worthwhile change in a work or community situation. You must have applied, or be currently enrolled on a postgraduate research/ doctoral programme in Professional Studies. Please include your academic or employer references and a 500 word personal statement outlining why you merit this award.

        STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Scholarship

        We have eight scholarships available to UK/EU applicants in receipt of (or predicted) minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree (or country-equivalent) who are applying for full-time MA/MSc/MRes in the subject area of:

        • Computing
        • Engineering
        • Exercise Science
        • Maths
        • Natural and Environmental Sciences
        • Psychology

        International applicants are also eligible to apply if they are an alumnus of the University.

        We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate and articulate:

        • Academic achievement
        • Related professional experience (full time, part time, internships etc)
        • Future vision and a desire to succeed

        The scholarship will be awarded as a 50% reduction of the postgraduate tuition fee and applied on enrolment.

      • The Textile Alliance Scholarship for Masters in Design

        Amount: The cost of tuition fees 
        Eligibility: This gold standard scholarship allows a high-achieving student who is a permanent resident in Hong Kong the opportunity to study full time for a one-year Masters programme, in a Design discipline at Middlesex University in London
        Deadline: Monday 9 July 2018

        You will be assessed on your design skills and ability by our academic staff in London and our Regional Director in Hong Kong. The scholarship will fund your tuition fees and living expenses in London for the duration of the programme.

    Please note that the decision of the Scholarships Committee is final.  Although you are welcome to apply for more than one Scholarship (if eligible) please note that successful applicants can only be in receipt of one scholarship at one time.  If successful in being awarded more than one scholarship you will automatically be awarded the one of highest value.

    Other scholarships

    There are also many charitable foundations that you can apply to for support through your studies - you can look them up online.

    If you have a Scottish parent who has served or is serving in the Armed Forces or part of a low income household and living in the London area, you may qualify for support from The Royal Caledonian Schools Trust. You can find out more about the Trust here.

    International students

    You should check with the Ministry of Education in your home country to see what funding may be available from your own government. International students can also apply for the British Government's Chevening Scholarships, and a variety of private agencies and charities for scholarships, bursaries and grants to study in the UK. For more information visit the British Council website or the UK Council for International Student Affairs website.
