Sonia Boyce is Professor of Fine Arts at Middlesex University. She is leading a three year project, Black Artists and Modernism, exploring the fundamental contribution of black British artists to modern art history, supported by £700,000 of funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Black Artists and Modernism is an extension of her 2005 publication, Shades of Black, which documented and debated the influential British Black arts movement of the 1980s. As an artist, Sonia uses diverse media including digital photography to produce socially-engaged artworks. Sonia was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2007, for services to art, and her works are held in the collection of Tate Modern.
