We’re CMH, a team of professionals in the fields of mental health, counselling, psychotherapy, and social work with a shared passion for supporting Middlesex students in their emotional wellness and making the most of their uni journey.

We’re passionate about helping you understand how taking care of your emotional wellbeing and mental health is fundamental to making the best out of your time at uni and every day after that.

Fiona Aitman [She/Her] - Counsellor

Fiona is a BACP registered Counsellor part of the CMH team since 2014. Fiona has previously worked in the fashion industry, finding soon that supporting people was more rewarding than trends, and became fascinated with psychology studies.

She thrives learning about the connection between the mind, body and soul, informing her therapeutic work with students through issues like anger, loss, cultural and sexual identity.

She loves watching horror films, double expressos, and early morning muddy-field walks with her Staffy/Boxer-cross, daydreaming away.

Marek Sarnecki [He/Him] – Counsellor

Marek is BACP registered Psychotherapist and also a Clinical Sexologist registered with College of Sexual and Relational Therapists. His clinical experience includes working for NHS, community counselling centres and higher education institutions.

Marek is particularly interested in sexuality and sexual identity. He actively supports LGBTQ+ community and finds this part of his work extremely rewarding.

Outside work Marek enjoys meeting up with friends, planning his next holidays and plying tennis.

Patty Sanders [She/Her] - Counsellor

Patty is a BACP-registered counsellor who has worked in higher education for 12 years.

She particularly enjoys working with the diverse student population here at Middlesex, and in her spare time, Patty likes to travel, either exploring and hiking in different areas of the UK or going overseas, and experiencing new cultures and landscapes.

When she can’t get away, she’ll look for an adventure within the covers of a good book.

Tamsin Prout [She/Her] - Counsellor

Tamsin has worked as a registered BACP Counsellor for ten years, training at  Birkbeck, University  of London and subsequently working with young people aged 13yrs upwards at a local mental health charity in Hertfordshire before joining Middlesex University in 2020.

Prior to this, she trained as a primary school teacher and music specialist and worked for many years in this setting.

She enjoys music, playing the piano and oboe and singing in choral groups from time to time.  In her free time, she can be found enjoying walks in the countryside, finding cafes that serve great tea and cakes and hanging out with friends and family.

Tina Torab [She/Her] - Counsellor

Tina is a counsellor who joined the team in early 2020. Tina is passionate about creating a safe space
for students with all backgrounds and to support their journey at Middlesex University.

Having been a student herself not so long ago she empathises with some of the challenges students face both personally and academically.

Tina enjoys integrating mindfulness practices within her work and gives great importance to individual needs. In her spare time she enjoys finding new thriller series, cooking or going for a hike.

Hannah Keating [She/Her] - Wellbeing and Mental Health Manager

Hannah is a HCPC registered Occupational Therapist (OT), joining the CMH Team as a Mental Health Advisor in February 2023.

Her previous experience includes wellbeing work within higher education and, more recently, as an OT in various NHS settings.

Hannah is passionate about supporting students from marginalised communities and developing safe spaces for students from all backgrounds at the University.

André Thompson [He/Him] - Health Promotion Coordinator

Andre Thompson

André has been a professional within marketing, creative technology and community building roles for 10+ years.

He has been at Middlesex University since 2011, completing everything from foundation and undergraduate degrees within arts, animation and games to a post-graduate degree in Creative Technology. André has had 9 different roles across the university and students’ union and is passionate about education, student health and #TeamMDX.

Outside of work André runs a startup social enterprise called Student Light, focussed on developing the skills of young adults to develop healthier, more equitable and sustainable societies.

Diana Oliveira [She/Her] - Student Health Promotion Assistant

Hello from Diana(she/her)! I am a Student Health Promotion Assistant. I graduated at Middlesex University with a BA in Dance Practices.

One of my passions is to work towards a cause and my past jobs reflected the power of connecting with people. In this role I get to not only do the same but also be able to encourage students to embrace wellness and live a balanced life. One of the most exciting parts of this role is to contribute on building a diverse, inclusive, and exciting community!

Malak Dahroug [She/Her] - Student Health Promotion Assistant

Malak Dahroug

Marta (she/they) is a Student Health Promotion Assistant. Marta recently graduated from BA Dance Practices (Choreography) at Middlesex University.

During her studies, Marta was deeply involved with student wellbeing and the promotion of a better student experience, which led her to this role.

Marta particularly enjoys the promotion of wellness through creativity and physical activity.

Alison Bevan [She/Her] - Mental Health Advisor

My name is Alison. I am a registered social worker from Aotearoa New Zealand and relocated to the UK in March 2023. I joined the CMH team as a Mental Health Advisor in April 2023. I have experience working in an acute mental health settings back in New Zealand, as well as experience working in a university and school.

I am passionate about supporting people with a range of mental health presentations, including a range of traumatic experiences. I work by providing a safe and empathetic space for people to explore and further understand their struggles, as well as highlighting strengths and uncovering resilience to promote improvements in overall wellbeing.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing hockey, exploring beaches and new places and spending time with friends and family

Henna Khan (she/her) – Mental Health Advisor

I am a registered social worker and qualified Integrative counsellor & coach.

I have experience in working therapeutically with children/adolescents and adults in various settings (NHS/Private).  I have an interest of working holistically with clients whilst empowering and supporting people In a warm and safe space to explore their well-being needs.

Outside of work I enjoy travelling and the study of philosophy.

Meryem Cilaci [She/Her] - Mental Health Advisor

Meryem is a registered Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist and member of the British Psychological Society. She joined the Team as a Mental Health Advisor in May 2023. Her previous experience includes working in inpatient, outpatient and educational settings.

She is passionate to explore the psychosocial factors impacting individuals and supporting students to learn tools/skills on achieving long term wellbeing whilst incorporating interculturality.

Cat (she/her) – Trainee Psychotherapist & Honorary Counsellor

Cat is a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist Trainee and Honorary Counsellor at Middlesex University.

Her previous experience includes working across both the corporate and charitable sectors, and most recently, supporting employee learning and personal development initiatives within a professional services firm.

She is passionate about supporting student wellbeing and creating an open and empathetic space for students to safely explore their experiences and to better understand themselves.

She enjoys getting lost in a good novel, spending time in nature and exploring new cuisines.

Isabella Evans Zoltowski [She/Her] - Trainee Counsellor

Professional standards and ethical codes

All of our Counsellors are members of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).

Our Mental Health Advisors are members of the University Mental Health Advisers Network along with other professional bodies like Social Work England, and adhere to its policy rules and ethical guidelines.

Training Counsellors are supervised individually by our senior staff members to make sure you’re getting the best support possible, and also to ensure they adhere to the policy rules and ethical guidelines of the BACP.

All of the support, sessions, and communication with us remains confidential within the Counselling & Mental Health team. This means we do not share verbal or written information about you to others, including family, friends, lecturers, faculty, other offices of Middlesex University or external providers without your prior consent.

Details of your contact with the service are not recorded on your academic records. There are rare instances when we would have to break confidentiality as any mental health related service, such as if you or others may be at risk of serious imminent harm

Training placement programme

We are a renown centre for the training and development of counsellors studying in one of our partner centres of Postgraduate education in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy.

Training counsellors are supervised individually by our senior staff members to ensure that they’re supporting you in the best way.

Depending on their requirements from their educational institution, a Trainee Counsellor might be able to see you longer than the 6 sessions of our short-term counselling service. Trainee Counsellors might have their sessions both online and in-person.

We do not have any openings for trainees for this academic year. You can still submit your information through the Application Form linked below, but do note we won’t be reviewing any applications until April 2024, and any potential placement would start not earlier than September 2024.
