Catering sees improvements across campus

25/11/2019
From serving more halal options to longer opening hours and a greater selection on prices, there have been significant catering improvements across campus

Having listened to and read through your feedback last year with regards to catering on campus, the University, along with the Student’s Union, worked with Chartwells (the University’s official partnered catering company) to draw up a new contract to trigger some significant and improved changes. The contract was signed in August 2019 and includes a number of exciting developments and improvements, some of which have already taken place.

As you may have seen or experienced, the following has been introduced over the last few months:

  • Longer opening hours of outlets to suit different students and their learning and work day patterns (e.g. Library Café is now open until 8pm)
  • Now serving halal certified meat in more outlets in MDX house, and halal certified sandwich options across all other campus catering outlets
  • Hot food now serving in the Grove
  • Money in your pocket scheme: a new series of meal deals based on small, medium and large portions
  • New coffee machines in Costa Quad and Ritterman Starbucks means faster service, decaf options and on-the-go products
  • Speed of service has dramatically increased with new high tech ovens; now takes half the time to get your hot artisan breads, including paninis.
  • Increased vegan food offerings in Streat and in the Grove

Thanks to those of you who have provided your positive feedback on the changes so far.

“Last year I had to walk somewhere else to get my food whereas now I can just go to MDX House. It’s so much more convenient. It saves me so much time and money.”

Eliza Dobai, 3RD year Fashion Design student

“This year I have noticed quite a big difference in food options which has encouraged me to eat on campus a lot more. There are more halal options which I really struggled with before; but now there are a lot more. I’ve actually realised - just thinking of it now - that I have eaten on campus every day!

Also the hot meals in MDX house are lovely. It gets boring to have a sandwich every day. I remember last year I paid something like £7 for a meal and I never went back it was just too much money for a student. I was quite happy to see the prices have gone down to £3 or £4.”

Sabren Amin, 3rd year Fashion Student

And it doesn’t end there. You’ve also got all of this and more to look forward to:

  • New retro catering trailer – grand opening on 10 December. Watch out for more info!
  • A Kitchen refurb meaning increase in variety of made in house sandwiches, salads, artisan breads and more competitive prices
  • Costa in Library replaced with Peak Street meaning a more diverse offering of coffee and prices

COMPETITION TIME – win free food vouchers for January to spend across campus value total £100
