MDX earns five nominations for Student Nursing Times Awards 2019

The university has been nominated in five categories at the prestigious Student Nursing Times Awards 2019, in a record year for entries to the competition.
Third year student Bronwyn Evans, 36, is nominated for Student Nurse of the Year: Mental Health, while Adult Nursing student Simone Gordon, 35, who is a course ambassador and co-chair of the recently established Student Healthcare Academic Equality Diversity and Inclusivity Forum, is shortlisted in the Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs category.
Bronwyn, who grew up in Durban, South Africa and has a first degree in Radiography, says she chose Mental Health nursing because she has “always been interested in why people do things, and what makes them tick." She calls Middlesex’s Mental Health nursing lecturers “one of the most genuine and engaged teams you could possibly want”.
"I feel I have had a platform to grow and nurture my own self, my learning, my academic [and] professional career. If I wanted it, it's been here. It's given me that space to explore."
Simone, who switched from a Masters in Business to Nursing, says her work for fellow students had usually been “behind the scenes. I’d always be called to do presentations”. When she received the nomination, “My mouth was on the floor. You don't realise the impact you have on people". She thanks lecturers Sheila Sobrani and Kathy Wilson for their “amazing” support.
MDX Associate Professor in the School of Health and Education and HEA Principal Teaching Fellow Sheila Cunningham, who led on the nominations for the awards, said: “MDX has some amazing staff, clinical and voluntary organisation partners and students, and this is an opportunity to recognise them nationally and share their incredible stories. As a profession we are reserved and humble and this has been quite a journey for people to share their experiences and contributions"
Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the School of Health and Education Jan Williams said, “The success of our student Orla Hillary at the Student Nursing Times Awards a couple of years ago made us realise that we need to share more widely the excellent work our nursing teams are involved in.
"The partnership between our students, staff, clinicians and service users is second to none. To be shortlisted in five categories of the SNTAs is a brilliant achievement – we have everything crossed for the final result!"
The awards are presented at a ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, on Friday 26th April.
