Sian Chinnoyelum Chinwuba was awarded ‘Most Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year’

Middlesex University students won in two categories at this year’s Student Nursing Times Awards.

Sian Chinnoyelum Chinwuba was awarded ‘Most Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year’ and Nicolette Porter won ‘Student Midwife of the Year’.

It was a glittering evening for Middlesex who were nominated in seven categories including the Mary Seacole Award for diversity and inclusion, Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs and Mental Health Student of the Year.

"I am thankful to the most amazing lecturers, family and friends who recognised and acknowledged my talents. I am SO grateful and honoured and I will forever be thankful and humble." Sian, Chinnoyelum Chinwuba, 'Most Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year' winner

The annual ceremony recognises students from across the UK who have demonstrated the academic achievement, clinical skills and personal qualities that will make them brilliant nurses in the future. It also honours those who are committed to developing new nursing talent as mentors, lecturers and providers of placements.

Sian admitted to being overwhelmed when she won:

"To be shortlisted for two awards and to have been crowned a winner in one of the biggest and most competitive category is something not to be taken lightly. I cannot express the overwhelming feeling I felt once I heard I won. I was and still am in shock. I was literally in tears and was shaking – all the emotions came rushing by so fast. And to top it all off, it was the last call before the end of the event. To be showered with so much love, praise, joy, excitement and pure happiness made the win feel so much sweeter and surreal. I am thankful to the most amazing lecturers, family and friends who recognised and acknowledged my talents and hard work and always supported me through it all. I am SO grateful and honoured and I will forever be thankful and humble."

Commenting on Sian’s award for ‘Most Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year’, the judges said:

"Their warm professionalism is engaging for patients and families. With real serenity, they get the small things right and also has international reach. The winner is far more inspiring and influential than they realise."

Nicolette Porter was awarded ‘Student Midwife of the Year’

"I am so proud of every single finalist - and our winners - it is a testament to the amazing work they are all doing - whether student or staff, in making a positive difference to nursing, midwifery and our local community." Head of Adult and Child Nursing, Sinead Mehigan, Middlesex

Nicolette expressed her delight at winning her Award:

"I'm thrilled to have won the Nursing Times Student Midwife of the Year Award. I hope that this win encourages both students and midwives to continue to provide inclusive and individualised care to all women and birthing people using maternity services."

Editor of Nursing Times, Steve Ford, highlighted the challenges that nurses have faced during the pandemic:

“Congratulations to all our winners at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2021. The awards recognise a group of outstanding students on their journey to entering the nursing profession, as well as all those who support them along the way, including lecturers, universities and healthcare providers.

“Given the ongoing difficulties facing the education sector due to the pandemic, I was really impressed by the strength of entries that we received for the awards this year. Many featured learning innovations and outstanding students that reflect the challenges created by Covid-19, and that saw usual learning processes disrupted and nearly 30,000 students doing paid placements to help out on the front line."
