Two nominations in top industry awards for MDX nursing and midwifery department

Middlesex’s nursing and midwifery department has been recognised in prestigious industry awards after being nominated for accolades in two categories
The successes and hard work of nursing staff and students have been highlighted with nominations in the Student Nursing Times Awards 2024 – important annual awards held by the health news publication.
Middlesex University’s Department of Nursing and Midwifery is shortlisted for the Nurse Education Provider of the Year (pre-registration) while Jo Killingley, Director of Programmes and Lead Midwife for Education at Middlesex University, has been nominated for University Educator of the Year.
Dr Sinead Mehigan, Head of Department, Nursing and Midwifery, said: “We are thrilled to be nominated in two categories in such prestigious awards which shine a light on our brilliant academics and students.
“The Nurse Education Provider of the Year nomination recognises how Middlesex prides itself in creating an educational environment that nurtures and develops student nurses and midwives.
“We aim to give our students a sense of belonging and being supported, while also focusing on recruitment of talented teaching staff and consolidation of learning materials to increase educational success.”

Among the Department’s initiatives, it has introduced ‘student cafes’ to provide opportunities for students to have open discussions about their programme, placements and careers advice, supported by a range of academics. There has also been a drive to recruit talented nurses and midwives to the department with the creation of two new teaching roles, while the department has also supported students with a range of essay guidance templates and a science hub to enhance learning.
“Although there are challenges in the NHS, nursing and midwifery are rewarding careers and we offer fantastic opportunities for advancement with amazing placements in our leading partner hospitals,” added Dr Mehigan.
In the second nomination, Jo Killingley has been recognised for her contribution as Lead Midwife for Education at Middlesex where she has introduced a number of initiatives including a ‘Study Well’ programme to support students’ emotional, physical and mental health while studying, and spearheading an initiative to provide tailored and individualised support to students who require learning support.
Jo said: “It has been a brilliant surprise to be shortlisted for this award. I feel humbled and delighted to read such positive comments from the students who nominated me. I feel very lucky to be helping to train some of the amazing future midwives at Middlesex University.”
The awards ceremony will take place in London on 26th April.
