    On the day

    • FAQs about graduation day

      • What to wear

Something smart preferably with a button on the front to attach the robe to the hood or bring a pin.

      • What to bring

-Your photo ID for ticket collection

-Your ticket and gown hire booking confirmation email

        -Your camera for personal photos

Luggage cannot be taken into the ceremony marquee nor left with staff to look after so we recommend you do not bring these items on the day.

      • Plan your arrival

You need to arrive at the campus at least an hour and a half before your ceremony. Make sure you leave in plenty of time to arrive before your ceremony

      • Registration, ticket collection, robe hire and photographs

-On arrival at the campus make your way to registration in the Grove building

-Once you have registered and collected your seating card and tickets make your way to RG08  to collect your academic robes

-Proceed to photography in the Portakabins opposite MDX House

      • Prize winners

If you are a prize winner this will be announced as you walk across the platform during the ceremony. Prizes are not given out at the ceremonies and each School will be making its own arrangements concerning how the prizes will be awarded or collected.

      • Programmes

All graduates and guests will receive a Middlesex Gazette covering the ceremony proceedings. These will be available in Registration in the Grove. The Gazette lists all students expected to complete their programmes of study in the 2016/2017 academic year and is not a confirmation that a student has completed their degree. The University is not held responsible for any students whose name may not appear in the Gazette.

      • Refreshments

A reception will take place in the Rickett Quadrangle after each ceremony for graduates and their guests. Guests should exchange their guest ticket and students should exchange their drinks voucher for a glass of bubbly and a light refreshment. Guests without a paid ticket are not entitled to refreshments but will be able to make use of the cash bar. We are unable to replace lost tickets or drinks vouchers.
Refreshments will be on sale throughout the campus.

      • Seating arrangements

The ceremonies marquee will be open from 9.45am for the morning ceremony, 1.00pm for the lunchtime ceremony and 3.45pm for the afternoon ceremony. Please be in your seat at least 15 minutes before the ceremony starts. Graduates should register and collect their seating card at least 30 minutes before the ceremony starts.

Graduates will have numbered seats at the front of the ceremonies marquee – your numbered seating card will be given to you at registration. Marshals will be on duty to direct you to your seat and a presentation card will also be on your seat. You need to take your seating card with you when you go up onto the stage.

Guests will be shown to their seats by a marshal.

The ceremonies are also shown via a live video feed in our lecture theatres for those guests who do not have tickets into the ceremony marquee. This is on a first come first served basis on the day of the ceremony.

      • The ceremony

Everyone wishing to enter the ceremony marquee should be holding their own ticket. Please speak to a marshal if your guests have not arrived and you have their tickets as they will not be permitted entry without them.

At the beginning of the ceremony, everyone will be asked to stand for the entry of the academic procession.

The Vice-Chancellor will open the ceremony and the Academic Registrar will then introduce the University Orator. Candidates for Honorary Degrees will be presented to the Chancellor and after this the Deputy Vice-Chancellor will present candidates for Teaching Fellowships and Research Awards

Graduates and diplomats will then be presented to the Chancellor. You should proceed as follows:

-Pick up your seating card and take it with you

-A marshal will guide you to the right hand side of the stage

-Hand your card to a marshal who will be standing near the lectern

-Wait until your name is called out. Your name will be read out as it is on the card.  If you do not use your first name and would prefer to have a different one read out please amend your card before you come up to the stage

-Walk across the platform, bow to the Chancellor and proceed to the Dean of School, shake hands and accept a scroll.  If you would prefer not to shake hands please place your right arm across your chest. If you are to receive a prize this will be read out when your name is announced

-Proceed to the left hand side of the stage and return to your seat as directed

-Please remain in your seat until the end of the ceremony and until the procession has left the ceremony marquee. You will then be asked to stand and follow the procession out of the marquee into the Rickett Quadrangle

-Marshals will be there to direct you throughout the presentation. Please note that you will not receive your certificate at the ceremony and the scroll is a memento to confirm your attendance at the graduation ceremony.

      • After the ceremony

Please make your way to the Rickett Quadrangle where a drinks reception will be held and academic robes should be returned to CG51.

      • Alumni association

Come and find the Alumni Association on graduation day to learn more about the lifelong support and benefits available to you as a graduate of Middlesex University.

We will have volunteers across the campus ready to tell you all about being part of the Alumni Association, and who can sign you up to myAlumniHub, our dedicated online area for alumni. Just look out for the Alumni Association t-shirts.
