Are you ready to vote in the Mayor of London and London Assembly Elections

12/03/2024

The Mayor of London and London Assembly Elections will take place on 2 May 2024. The London Borough of Barnet want to ensure that you're aware of the elections, registered to vote, and aware of new Voter ID requirements.

British, Irish, and qualifying EU and Commonwealth citizens aged 18+ can register and vote in the Mayor of London and London Assembly elections. The deadline to register to vote for these elections is Tuesday 16 April. If you're not registered, you can do this online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote .

Did you know that:

  • If you have recently moved house, you need to re-register at your new address to vote
  • Paying Council Tax does not automatically register you to vote. If you're a London Borough of Barnet resident, check if you are registered by emailing ero@barnet.gov.uk or calling 020 8359 5577.

You now need Voter ID to vote in a polling station

The UK Government has introduced a requirement for voters to show photo ID when voting at a polling station. Make sure you’re ready and check you’ve got the right photo ID. To find out what types of ID will be accepted visit the Electoral Commission website or call their helpline on 0800 328 0280. If you don’t have an accepted form of photo ID, apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

Not able to get to a polling station?

Apply to vote by post or by proxy if you're unable or do not want to attend the polling station in person.

  • To vote by post, apply online by 5pm on 17 April. You don't need photo ID to vote by post. Your ballot papers will be sent to you before polling day and your completed postal vote must be received back by 10pm on 2 May 2024.
  • Proxy voting is when you nominate someone you trust to vote on your behalf. Apply online by 5pm on 24 April. Your proxy will need to show their photo ID when casting your vote at the polling station.

For further information on registering to vote, Voter ID and ways to vote, visit the Barnet Council website or contact the Electoral Services Team on 020 8359 5577 or email ero@barnet.gov.uk.
