Counselling & Mental Health

Another way to help you look after your mental health here at Middlesex is to speak to our Counsellors and Mental Health Advisors. They offer support for your emotional wellness and are passionate about you making the most of your university journey. You're not alone.

The quickest way to reach them is through the OneOff request form, but they have other types of support on offer.

If you’re an international student / outside of the UK

We have an online counselling service that you can access from most countries, and where you can even request a counsellor who speaks your first language. WhatsApp 'Hi' to +353 87 369 0010 and mention you’re an international Middlesex Student. There’s always someone to listen.

If you’re staying in Usher, Platt, Ivy, Writtle Halls

The quickest way for you to have contact with a Counsellor for emotional and listening support is through the programme of Optivo set up for free for students in our halls. Please call the free number 0800 028 3766, indicating that you are a student living in an Optivo Student Hall.

Other Support

Remember that you should always reach out to your GP for guidance on the best resources and support for your health, and that includes your mental health too. If in a life-threatening crisis or emergency, please call 999 for immediate assistance.

Registering with a GP - We recommend registering with a General Practitioner (GP) or doctor as soon as you arrive at Middlesex or the UK. GPs are often the first point of contact and can refer you to more specialist care should you need it. You can register with some GPs such as The Uni Doctor who visit campus on Tuesday and Fridays, however you can decide to register with whichever GP you choose.

Shelter - For housing enquiries, advice and support, you can contact Shelter via phone, web chat and also through their online resources. They are open on weekdays, weekends, and over the Christmas holidays.

Citizen’s Advice Bureau - can help with a wide range of matters including benefits, money, work, housing and immigration. They have a variety of contact options from the phone, live chat and in-person centres.

Samaritans - is a telephone, email and visitor service for anyone who needs a space to talk, and they have a 24-hour confidential listening service. Call 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org.uk

Papyrus Hopeline UK - is a confidential helpline for young people dealing with suicide, depression and emotional distress. If you are having thoughts of suicide or are concerned for someone who might be you can contact HOPELINEUK for confidential support and practical advice.

Shout - offers support in a crisis, for example if someone is feeling suicidal, at risk of self-harm, abuse or experiencing relationship issues. Text SHOUT to 85258 to start a confidential conversation via text in a life-threatening emergency, or if you are actively suicidal call 999 immediately or go to your nearest Hospital Accident and Emergency dept.
