eVisas

New Online immigration status (eVisa)

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is in the process of creating a digital immigration system. This entails UKVI substituting physical documents with an online record of one's immigration status. This is referred to as an eVisa.

What is an eVisa?

An eVisa or digital visa will serve as an online record of your immigration status for the UK.  Transitioning to an eVisa will not alter your current immigration status or the terms of your existing permission to enter or stay in the UK.

There are several advantages to an eVisa or digital visa:

  • Enhanced security: They cannot be misplaced, stolen, or tampered with, unlike physical documents.
  • Expedited process: No waiting period or physical document collection post-visa decision. Please note, however, that providing biometric information in person may still be necessary.
  • Streamlined verification: It should be swifter and more straightforward to confirm your immigration status upon entry to the UK.

You can watch a video on what an eVisa is.

Who will get an eVisa?

The aim is for the eVisa to replace physical immigration documents such as:

  • Biometric residence permits (BRP cards)
  • Biometric residence cards (BRC)
  • Endorsements on passports, such as indefinite leave to enter vignettes
  • Vignette stickers in passports, like entry clearance or visa vignettes

If you presently possess a physical immigration document granting permission to enter or stay in the UK, the transition to an eVisa will affect you.

It's important to note that the move to eVisas will impact ALL individuals holding a physical immigration document for entry and residency in the UK.

My (BRP) Biometric Residence Permit expires on 31st December 2024

If your BRP card expires on 31 December 2024 but your visa allows you to remain in the UK beyond this date, this is intentional. UKVI is gradually phasing out physical immigration documents, including those listed above. As of 1 January 2025, a BRP card will no longer be necessary. You will be able to verify your immigration status online without it.

If your BRP or BRC card is set to expire on 31 December 2024, it's crucial to verify the actual duration of your visa permission. You should refer to your UKVI decision email or letter for this information.

We will be updating this page with additional instructions and guidance as they become accessible.
