Powerful MDX Women: Managing her studies at MDX and professional football career

21/01/2020
Lucia Leon, is an inspiration to all of us and an example of how a woman can do it all.

How Lucia Leon manages it all - studying while playing for Super League giants, Tottenham Hotspur Women.

She isn’t just a second year Sports Science student at MDX, but is also a top footballer, playing for Tottenham Hotspur Women, in the top tier FA Women’s Super League.

She shows us how anything is possible if you are determined enough to achieve your goals and is very much an example of how to become #MadeinMiddlesex.

Even though her journey hasn’t always been easy, after moving to London with her family from Madrid, she joined the club’s youth ranks seven years ago.

“I couldn’t speak any English when I first joined Spurs and it was so difficult but thankfully football is a universal language.” Said Lucia.

Lucia has worn the number 2 shirt, in tribute to her late uncle, who died shortly after she moved from Spain.

“When he died it took on so much more meaning. He passed away on the 22nd of August 2013 which was literally a month before I came here.” She revealed.

After settling into life in the UK, Lucia began pursuing educational qualifications with support from Spurs women. Her life as a student, is a world away from the stereotypical view of: “students partying every night.”

Her current schedule is unenviable, as she juggles university studies with playing football at the highest level. She trains three times a week, has two full days at the Hendon and Allianz Park campuses and another hour for studies on Friday, before matches at the weekend.

“In these two years I didn’t think I’ve ever been to any uni party. I might have a match the next day or training so it’s literally impossible to go out partying.” She said.

But the hard work all paid off! Lucia featured in 17 games in the FA Women’s Championship last season and earned a call up to the Spanish Under 23 side: which was a really proud moment for her and her family, she said.

“The two promotions happened so quickly but good things happen to good people. I truly believe that.” She said.

Lucia is enjoying her career as a professional footballer, but knows that a career like this doesn’t last forever. This is why Lucia is pursuing her next biggest passion, which is helping other people maintain high levels of fitness by working as an instructor.

The reason she chose to study with #TeamMDX was because her course focuses on strength and conditioning, and it’s also given her the opportunity to gain fitness instructor qualifications.

“There are teachers here at Middlesex, who I’ve worked with before so I had a good relationship with them. Everything I’m learning is linked to being a gym instructor.

I’m hoping to work with individuals and athletes.”

“I don’t ever regret coming here, it was the best decision”. Lucia said.
