    Doctorate extension scheme

The Doctorate Extension Scheme (DES) is a Home Office initiative which allows PhD students to extend their Tier 4 (General) visas to remain in the UK for up to one year following graduation.

The scheme is designed to help PhD graduates gain work experience, or allow them time to find skilled employment with an employer who can offer them a Tier 2 visa.

The DES is offered under Tier 4 and the University is therefore required to act as Tier 4 sponsor for PhD graduates who are on this scheme.

Who is eligible for the Doctorate Extension Scheme (DES)?

To be eligible for the Doctorate Extension Scheme, you must:

    • Be enrolled at the University as a current PhD student
    • Hold a valid Tier 4 (or pre-Tier 4) student visa
    • Hold a valid passport
    • Be due to complete your PhD within the next 60 days
    • Have not yet completed your PhD course

You cannot apply for the Doctorate Extension Scheme if you do not meet all of these criteria.

Please be aware that this scheme is only open to current students who have not yet completed their PhD course. If you have already been awarded your PhD, you cannot apply for the Doctorate Extension Scheme.
