3rd year student's portrait selected for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize

Double whammy for one Middlesex University London scholar
Award-winning photography student, Dexter McLean from Middlesex University London, struck gold this month when his work was recognised not once but twice.
In November Dexter, who has cerebral palsy, attended the private view at the National Portrait Gallery where one of his photographs has been selected for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2016. He followed this triumph by receiving the JAH Scholarship, which is open to students who have overcome physical challenges to complete their studies.
Dexter is in his third year of the BA Photography at Middlesex University London and is hoping to start his Master’s degree in Photography, also at Middlesex, next academic year. His tutor, Michael Bradley, Director of Programmes for Communication Arts said: “I would be very pleased to have Dexter on the MA Photography programme. He is a very talented photographer.”
Focusing on what disabled people can do rather than what they can’t do is a passion for Dexter. He said: “I am a disabled photographer and I’m interested in the reputation of disabled people in the media. Through my photographs, I am showing that disabled people can pursue their dreams”.
Commenting on the success of Dexter and the other scholars, Middlesex University London’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Blackman said:
“Scholarships can play a key part in supporting students in accomplishing their goals. At Middlesex University London we pride ourselves in transforming the lives of students by providing them with the tools and learning they need to be the leaders of tomorrow.”
