Middlesex Students’ Union support local community with inaugural soup kitchen

The University’s campus is completely accessible to the local community and MDXSU want to utilise the excellent facilities to get to know local residents.

Middlesex University Students' Union (MDXSU) are organising a soup kitchen for homeless people and those from a low income background at the University’s Hendon Campus on 8 October.

As well as providing a hot meal between 10:00 and 15:00, nursing students, under qualified supervision, will be on hand to provide medical aid alongside mental health nurses and psychologists. Local doctors will also be dropping by to assist with the medical assessments.

Middlesex Law students will be present to provide legal advice and assistance in areas such as filling in benefit forms whilst career advice and practical assistance in finding jobs will be provided.

There are plans for a clothes bank to be setup on campus and organisers are looking for barbers and hairdressers to volunteer their time to help out on the day. Local students and residents will be invited to use this clothes bank once it is in place.

The community support day has been organised by Middlesex University Students’ Union Vice-President, Orla Hillary who is also a qualified nurse, she said: “Middlesex University Students’ Union is committed to working in the local community to help those that need it most.

“Although plans are well underway, we are still looking for volunteers. Any food that people are willing to donate or make, hairdressers or barbers willing to spend some time using their skills and clothes you no longer want or need, we would love and appreciate your help.”

“Hendon’s very own Tesco is donating both staff and food for the soup kitchen. We’re really excited to get Tesco staff down volunteering with us and spreading around their food to the local community. We also have our amazing local pub who we regularly work closely with, the Claddagh Ring, donating a lovely big pot of Irish stew and Soda bread for the event.”

“If you can’t make this month’s soup kitchen, don’t worry. We’re planning on holding them every month, so there will be plenty of opportunities for you to get involved with MDXSU’s soup kitchen.”

If you would be interested in helping or supporting the soup kitchen please visit the event’s Facebook page and the MDXSU website.
