Meningitis checks

20/09/2016
Young teenagers and 'freshers' students going to university for the first time are advised to have a vaccination to prevent meningitis W disease

Overseas and mature students up to the age of 25, should also contact their GP to have the Men ACWY vaccine, ideally before the start of or in the first few weeks of the academic year.

The Men ACWY vaccine is given by a single injection into the upper arm and protects against four different causes of meningitis and septicaemia – meningococcal (Men) A, C, W and Y diseases. There are two Men ACWY vaccines called Nimenrix and Menveo. They are very similar and both work equally well.

There is more information on the NHS' website.
