Antonia Young, who is a first year student studying Criminology and Youth Justice, received the Redrow* Aspirational Award.
Antonia’s life changed at the age of 20 when she was diagnosed with cancer. She had never imagined going to university but after enduring six gruelling months of chemotherapy to beat the disease she decided to alter the direction of her life and apply to university. She says when she came to visit Middlesex she could imagine studying at the Hendon-based campus.
She said: “I knew after surviving cancer treatment I had the potential to do whatever I put my mind to. I am thankful to the Redraw for helping me to get one step closer to achieving my professional goals.”
Another student from Wembley, Sheikh Muhidin Sheikh**, was awarded a Middlesex University Sports Scholarship. Sheikh was involved in a road accident at the age of six and has been in a wheelchair ever since. He is in his third year of a degree in Sports and Exercise Science and is committed to realising his dream of competing at the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2020. He said:
“Receiving this scholarship allows me to progress in sport by enabling me to purchase equipment that is vital in my search for gold. It also makes me happy that my University has acknowledged my achievements and recognised I am a worthy individual for this opportunity to help with my sporting career. Thank you Middlesex for fuelling my ambition and believing in me.
“I hope to be an inspiration for others. If you can dream you can achieve.”
Commenting on the success of Sheikh, Antonia and the other scholars, Middlesex University London’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Blackman said:
“Scholarships can play a key part in supporting students in accomplishing their goals. At Middlesex University London we pride ourselves in transforming the lives of students by providing them with the tools and learning they need to be the leaders of tomorrow."
