Jazz duo Binker and Moses, which is comprised of tenor saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd, scooped the Jazz Newcomer of the Year Award at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards on 10 May.
One half of the band is former Middlesex University student Binker Golding who grew up in Enfield, north London, and graduated from the BA Jazz degree course in 2007.
Binker Moses said: “We see winning the Parliamentary Jazz award for best newcomer as a huge triumph and step forward for the band. We're very grateful that they recognised our work and appreciate the award massively.
“I'm personally really grateful for the help, support, guidance and education my former tutors gave to me in my three years at Middlesex, in particular Nikki Iles, Chris Batchelor, Rob Townsend and Stuart Hall. Each of them taught me numerous things that have proven to be invaluable and which I still draw upon eight years later.
“So much of my music is a summation of what I learnt there.”
Binker and Moses startled the British jazz world last year when they released their debut album Dem Ones. Most young musicians would have opted for the more conventional trio or quartet setting, but this duo crackled with the kind of stark energy and daring ideas that one would expect from older players.
Middlesex University Jazz Senior Lecturers Nikki Iles (Printmakers) and Chris Batchelor (Loose Tubes) were both also nominated for the Jazz Ensemble of the Year Award in their respective groups.
