Vote in the upcoming EU referendum

21/06/2016
Ahead of the referendum on 23 June

You will have recently received a joint email from Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Blackman, highlighting the importance of voting in the EU Referendum on 23 June. Here's more information about how to vote...

What is a referendum? It’s a national vote which takes place on issue and the UK gives its eligible citizens the chance to vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer to a question of national importance.

What is the referendum about? We’re being asked: ‘Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?’

When Can I Vote? Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 23 June 2016. Early mornings and the evening are likely to be busy times with people voting on the way to/from work, so you may want to consider voting outside of these times.

What Do I Need To Bring With Me? Do I Need My Polling Card? A lot of people will take their polling card with them to vote, but if you’ve misplaced your card or you forget to bring it on the day, you can still vote. You just need to know where your polling station is and give your name and address when you arrive. If you are voting in Northern Ireland you will need to take photo ID.

Where Can I Vote? The location of your polling station will be on your polling card which will be delivered to your registered address before polling day.

If you don’t have your polling card, don’t worry, you can still find out the location of your polling station through your local electoral registration office.

Click here and scroll down to the check the contact details of your local electoral registration office box, enter your postcode and then call the number provided. They will tell you the location of your polling station.

Postal vote If you applied to vote by post, you will receive your ballot paper by post.  You will need to return it to your local area electoral office so it arrives by 10pm on Thursday 23 June 2016. We would encourage you to post it as soon as you receive it as postal delivery timings can vary. If you are not able to post it in time, you can return it to your polling station (before 10pm on 23 June).

Proxy Vote If you have registered to vote by proxy (allowing somebody you trust to vote on your behalf) make sure you remember to tell them which way you want to vote ahead of 23 June 2016.

What is the stance of the Vice-Chancellor and University Board of Governors? Like many other UK universities, our Board of Governors support remaining in the EU. Membership of the European Union allows our students to study in other parts of the EU and improves international collaboration between our researchers. Whilst this is the stance of the University’s Board of Governors, we strongly encourage you to vote and make your own decision.

What is the stance of the Students' Union elected officers? All MDXSU Sabbatical officers for the current and next academic year have signed a statement in support of remaining in the EU. You can read this blog in full online. Whilst this is the stance of the Students' Union elected officers, we strongly encourage you to vote and make your own decision.
