Middlesex University wins EcoCampus Gold Award

15/06/2018
This award serves as a sound building block for management to improve performance, particularly in relation to energy management, in order to further reach its goals of reducing carbon footprints

MDX Green SpacesEcoCampus is a national Environmental Management System (EMS) and award scheme for the higher education sector across the world. It recognises institutions that are addressing key sustainability issues such as carbon reduction.

Middlesex University was recently awarded the Platinum standard for Environmental Management. This validates the University's ability to manage environmental issues, associated with its operations, in line with the widely recognised EcoCampus standards.

Over the years, there were significant investments made by management to bring the university's systems and processes up to the EcoCampus standards, especially in energy and waste management. With this award, Middlesex joins other certified peer universities and becomes a role model for best environmental practices for other institutions in the sector and beyond.

The university is now working towards attaining the International Standard for Environmental Management award, which is held by a limited number of leading institutions in the higher education sector.

With further improvement plans in place, MDX students can participate in the University's sustainability initiatives through:

  • Freewheelers bicycle hire scheme
  • Joining a Student Environmental Group
  • Attending Fairtrade Events on campus
  • Reusing cups and bottles and saving money through the Refill App
  • The Go Green Week and other University wide activities.

Students can also set up a new green initiative by contacting MDXSU here.
