Anna graduate story

Anna tells us about her university and graduate experience with an International Politics degree

When I started my International Politics degree back in 2010 I wasn’t very clear what I want to do after.

I had a vague idea that I liked working with people, coming up with new ideas and generally ‘being busy’.

In my third year, I spent a lot of time in the library (which became my favourite MDX facility, second to Costa!).

I had a great space to focus on researching my dissertation as well looking into potential career paths.

The lecturers were amazing, talking to us about the importance of internship and work experience opportunities.

As a result of this, I applied for a summer internship at one of the City think-tanks. It was a great ten-week experience of working with businesses and HR specialists on researching the reasons behind why women don’t reach ‘the top’ in the business world. During my time there I realised that HR was something I was really passionate about.

I decided to apply for the Civil Service Fast Stream in HR and I had plenty of skills from university that helped me through the various assessment stages:

  • Reading with understanding and being analytical about given information
  • Questioning and researching sources of information
  • Working with others and building common ground;
  • Debating skills
  • Importance of compromise
  • Importance of context and ‘big picture’.

These are the skills that I developed during my time at MDX, which I was also able to ‘show off’ during my interview, as well as use at work.

Thanks to this very strong base skill set, I had five fantastic years at the Civil Service and I’ve since taken these skills onto my current role at the BBC.
