Getting ahead events

Prepare for starting University, make new friends and have fun.

Getting Ahead is a whole day of activities to help you feel confident and at home at Middlesex.

Throughout the day, you will be able to hear a talk from a motivational guest speaker, take part in a Scavenger Hunt, get active with sports and games and enjoy a free lunch. You’ll also have the chance to attend two workshops in the afternoon that will encourage you to:

  • maximise your potential and discover ways to achieve your study and career goals
  • learn the secret uni life hacks to get your first year off to a flying start
  • find a community, club or society with MDXSU
  • get set up for your first week of studies with your free module textbooks

You will be able to do your ID check and to collect your Student ID card. Please do not forget your passport.

  • How to unlock your full potential

    This interactive workshop will focus on the tools you need to be successful in achieving your study and career goals. You’ll look at time management, creativity, proactivity and visualising small steps towards success. You’ll also recognise the common barriers to success and learn how to avoid or mitigate them. An interactive exercise will help build your individual action plan, getting you feeling more prepared for your first term.

  • Preparing for higher education: building academic confidence and engagement

    Starting at university is an exciting time but it can also be confusing to know what’s expected of you as a student. This session aims to help you build confidence in academic writing and terminology, as well as exploring ideas about engaging with the learning environment to make the most of your studies.

  • MDXSU communities

    Join our students’ union for this interactive session to discover the many communities and societies you could join. You’ll also have the chance to explore your expectations of your university experience with MDXSU seeking ways to match it or exceed it.

  • Uni Life Hacks: What you need to know that no one ever tells you

    Get your year off to a flying start with these top tips for your best possible university experience. Discover what you really need to know about university that no one ever tells you. You'll have a great time in this fun, interactive workshop and you'll leave feeling confident and knowing exactly what to expect. There are limited spaces available, so secure your place and book now.

  • Kortext: Your free personal e-textbooks

    Each module you study comes with a free personal e-textbook (Kortext) which covers the set text you will need to complete the module. This session will get you set up so you can download and access Kortext from your own devises. The Library team will also explain some of the key features of the system so you can get the best out of it.

    To book this session, you must have enrolled and got your devices linked to University systems such as myUniHub, My Learning and University Email. If you have not done so, please attend the Progressing your study with IT session.

  • Progressing your study with IT

    This short informative workshop will equip you with the IT basics needed to help you get ahead in your studies. This session will help you to:

    • Access and navigate Unihub, MDXapp and myUniHub
    • Get your personal devices on the WI-FI
    • Set up your University email on your personal devices
    • Locate the printers and how to use them
    • Download software including Office 365
    • Keep safe and secure online

    Please note: you need to be enrolled to attend this session, otherwise you won't have access to the systems. You can enrol online from the 2nd of September.

Student money: are you getting it?

This interactive session, run by the Student Welfare Advice Team, will help you discover if you’re getting everything you’re eligible for, what help is available as well as providing handy hacks, tips and tricks on saving money. Join in with small group discussions plus a quiz with entry into a prize draw.
