Maintaining A Healthy Lifestyle On Campus

By Colin O'Halloran, former Middlesex student

Two students out in the fieldsIt can be hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle and by now February has perhaps hampered a few new-year resolutions. Eating healthily when you’re on campus studying or socialising isn’t difficult and neither is maintaining physical and mental health. This guide will show you around the healthier options, forgotten services and how you can keep healthy on campus.

Sport and fitness

Exercise can be fun, and there are many diverse activities for students on campus. Being able to book a 3G football pitch or use the Real Tennis Court on campus gives you, and your friends, an informal environment to enjoy. The table tennis and the basketball hoop outside of MDX House are for all to enjoy so why not socialise over a game. Exercise without realising it is always better. For those who are more active, classes are provided so you can train with an experienced trainer on hand to help you through and improve your technique and regime. If you are shy or conscious, female only classes and beginner classes are provided.

Mental health and other support

Your mental health is equally important as physical health. The Wellbeing Service provided by the University at Sunny Hill House gives confidential advice to those who need it. The Learning Enhancement Team, based in Sheppard Library, provide services in Academic Writing, Mathematics, English and more which may be the first step to overcoming stress related to your studies. You can find more information about the support networks that the University offers on UniHub.

Food and drink

Did you know the university provides gluten-free and free-from options? The new Blend and Grind Coffee Bar situated in the Ritterman Building provides healthy smoothies. Open from 9am on weekdays, you can enjoy a brainy breakfast or have a nice warm lunch with the soup options available. Those of you needing or wanting a gluten-free option can get all the treats available with the chocolates, crisps and other gluten-free snacks on offer.

Student lifestyle posts which reflect the interests of our students are written by student interns working within the Marketing department and do not reflect the research, guidance or opinions of Middlesex University.
