Why Belonging To A Society Will Enhance Your MDX Experience

By MDX Student Writer, Natasha Kothari

Student Writer Natasha interviews students from multiple societies to find out what it means to them to belong to their society

From knitting to burlesque to vegan, there really is a society for everyone here at MDX.

I’ve been talking to four different students from four different societies to find out what it means to them to belong to their society.

Lisa, President Of Burlesque & Pole Dancing Society:

“Hi, my name's Lisa, I’m currently the President and founder of the burlesque and pole dance society! My best memory so far was when we first raised money for the Terrace Higgins charity.

It was the girl’s first performance and it was amazing to see how far everyone had come from their first lesson, they all became amazing show girls!!! Being part of the society has helped me in so many ways, I feel I have grown as a teacher, performer and most importantly I feel as if I am part of one big feather and Rhinestone family.

We are currently hosting a few events including a ‘burlesque at the movies’ on the 9 April and also a ladies night for the Coppafeel charity to help promote women checking their breast in order to look out for early signs of cancer. Finally, watch out for a potential burlesque calendar!”

Harshil Thanki, President Of Indian Society:

“I'm Harshil, studying Accounting and Finance. I know what just went through your mind - 'boring'  - and I can't argue with that, it is sometimes, but not all the time!

As the President of the Indian Society I wanted to bring Indian students at MDX together for some really great events. A great example is the Holi festival event last year, which was so much fun to organize and run! Watch out for Holi 2018 in March. We are going to make it even better and bigger this time round!

Being in a society has helped me gain important social skills that I can use in my future endeavours. Our society promotes peace and integration. I and the society hope to do justice to this key goal for all our loyal society members!”

Chris Skordis, Member Of Unlimited Potential Society

“Heyyy I’m Chris and I am currently studying psychology with criminology and I’m in my 2nd year of study. The society I am a part of is the Unlimited Potential society. I joined this society not only to meet new people but to challenge myself in new ways as a person. My best memories are firstly when we had a guest speaker called Luke who came and spoke to us. Luke is a person that helps others develop themselves in a positive way as in helping with goal setting and helping people timetable events in their life. And secondly, when I got the chance to be a speaker! I put together a 10 minute presentation about my life and the things that have helped me achieve certain things in my life.

This society has helped me in a way that I have been able to develop myself as a person and look at myself in a different light. Not only that, but it has brought me closer to others that have also wanted to inspire and motivate.

Come join our society and transform your life today!”

Helen Rupp, President Of Singers & Musicians Society:

“My name is Helen Rupp, I am a composer, musician and singer-songwriter studying music at Middlesex. I’m the President of the Singers & Musicians Society. I’m part of the society because when I came to Middlesex there was only one music society so it was only natural for me to join it. I actually didn’t turn up to the first few events, but was dragged in at the end of the year and it’s been awesome since!

We’ve had some interesting karaoke moments, 4 people trying to sing ‘creep’ and a group doing the Pokémon theme are notably memorable...but for me my highlight was winning the Society’s MDX Got Talent in my first year.

It’s boosted my confidence definitely. I’ve had some pretty severe social anxiety in my life and when I got here I didn’t really know how to speak to people. There’s something great about being surrounded by people who are passionate about the same thing as you, and it’s really taught me how to communicate again. We’re got some great events coming up for the Society including: karaokes, open mics, chill sessions, some charity gigs and maybe a talent show.

Believe in yourself, find your passion and pursue it no matter what it takes. Oh and also, we meet every Monday, if you love any kind of music come chill with us!”

Join the various societies at MDX today and give yourself a chance to mingle with some likeminded people and pursue your interests in a fun and exciting environment!

And if there’s nothing that takes your fancy, why not start your own society?
